There's a secret entrance exam for nerddom. Nobody hands you a syllabus, but the requirements are understood: beat the sacred games, attend the sacred premieres, hold your own in the sacred online arguments. I have been a nerd for approximately three decades, and I am here to report that I failed the exam. Repeatedly. In spectacular fashion.

Consider this my sworn deposition. And consider the comments section your own confessional booth, because I refuse to be the only one.

Confession #1: I Have Never Finished the Sacred RPG

There is a role-playing game so universally beloved that admitting you haven't finished it is roughly equivalent to telling people at Thanksgiving you microwave your corn. I have started this game four times. Four! I have a save file from 2011 sitting on a hard drive in a drawer like an unopened tax notice.

It's not that it's bad — by every account it's a masterpiece. It's that it is long, and around hour forty I always hit the same wall: a sprawling optional area, a crafting system I refuse to learn, and the sudden, overwhelming urge to replay a game I've already beaten six times instead.

Every time I confess this to fellow nerds, they look at me the way you'd look at someone who's never seen a sunset. And every time, I nod solemnly and add it to next year's backlog. Next year is going to be huge, by the way. Next year is always huge.

Confession #2: I Fell Asleep at the Midnight Premiere

This was the event. The movie everyone had waited a decade for. My friends and I secured tickets the moment they went live, decked ourselves out in merch, and settled into a packed theater at 11:40 PM vibrating with anticipation.

I was asleep by 12:25.

Not dozing. Not drifting. Fully unconscious, head back, mouth open, during the opening act of a cultural landmark. My friend Dan elbowed me awake during what he described as "the single most important scene of our generation," and I spent the next two hours drifting in and out like a grandpa at a matinee.

The worst part? When everyone emerged from the theater wrecked and emotional, I had to nod along to conversations about moments I experienced as a warm, dark nap. I've since rewatched it properly — twice, actually — but the original sin remains. You don't get un-credit for sleeping through history.

Confession #3: I Wiped the Raid. Heroically. Confidently. Wrong.

Every MMO player has a raid story. Mine is not a story of triumph. Mine is the story of the time I volunteered — volunteered — to handle a mechanic I had not read about, in a group of strangers, while assuring everyone "I got this."

I did not got this.

I pulled the wrong add, at the wrong time, in the wrong direction, directly into the rest of the group. The wipe was total. The chat went quiet in that specific, devastating way chat goes quiet when twenty people are all typing and deleting the same message. The raid leader's response — a single "...why" — lives in my head rent-free to this day.

The lesson cost me my reputation on that server. What it taught me was priceless: read the mechanic. Read it twice. Never, ever say "I got this" out loud. That phrase is a curse.

Confession #4 (Bonus Round): I Called the Character by the Wrong Name for Two Years

In a certain beloved franchise, there is a main character whose name I confidently mispronounced for two full years — in public, at a convention, to a very patient booth employee who corrected me with the gentle sorrow of a hospice nurse. I have never recovered. I never will.

The Point of All This

Here's my hot take: the "rites of passage" were never the real test. Nobody actually cares whether you finished the game or stayed awake at the premiere. The real rite of passage is collecting a healthy pile of embarrassing failures and wearing them like badges, because they're proof you were there — invested, excited, and willing to wipe a raid for a mechanic you refused to read about.

So drop your confessions in the comments. The unfinished classics. The napped-through premieres. The heroic group-wipes. I'll go first: it's all of the above, and I regret nothing. Well. Almost nothing.
